Bridge the gap between Business and IT

The conflict between the IT department and business executives has been persisting for years. What is the cause for the continuous friction between IT and business?

Decision makers often feel frustrated because their needs and objectives are not met by IT. At the same time, it can be difficult for IT to understand specific business requirements or know the business direction without effective communication. According to ComTIA, more than a quarter (27%) of final decisions about which projects and investments get sign off are now made by somebody other than the IT department. 

Can IT take more ownership of digital?

IDC predict that by 2020, 50% of the Global 2000 will see the majority of their business depend on their ability to create digitally-enhanced products, services, and experiences. If the business strategy is usually defined by sales, marketing and/or business leaders, the IT department plays an integral role in adoption, integration and execution. Therefore, the collaboration between IT departments and business executives is important to ensure a smooth process in adopting new digital technologies.

As the world migrates to a digital mindset, one would expect that IT should know about it and focus on discovering new ways to digitally transform business processes in their organisations. Now, we’re not saying that this should solely be the IT departments' responsibility by default, but we are pointing out that this is often a general mindset in many companies.

Digital leaders at CBS, IBM and SAP believe that culture is the biggest digital transformation obstacle. Deloitte Consulting LLP found that “what separates digital leaders from the rest is a clear digital strategy combined with a culture and leadership poised to drive transformation.”

Changing mindsets and shaping culture is often time consuming and it’s probably the biggest problem in many organisations. Investing in people with a hands-on mindset and problem-solving attitude is required to solve problems internally.

Matching the pace of digital

Apps are famous for driving digital leadership quickly and effectively. They are the bridges between old and new systems, the tools companies use to be more agile and the cutting-edge technology companies need to stay competitive.

Rowan Trollope, senior vice president and general manager of IoT and innovations for Cisco agrees that apps are crucial for digital transformation: “They provide very powerful insight. They understand the power of application instrumentation in a world where every company is going to be a tech company. Technology is basically transforming every company.”

Can apps help IT people become more receptive to adopting new technology? Yes, they can certainly make IT people’s lives easier by acting like transformational software additions to current or old programs, so digital adoption and constructive mindset should be first done internally, then shared with the outside world.
